ABOUT MOQUI TRADING CO
Moqui Trading Co was founded in 1984 in Cottonwood, AZ by Mike Bradford and continues to this day in Spavinaw, OK.
Mike’s first experience in American Indian Arts was a visit to the Hopi Reservation in 1981, he was mesmerized by the Hopi people and their culture. It wasn’t long after that visit that he realized that the main necessity to Hopi Kachina doll carving was the water seeking cottonwood root and the Verde Valley abounded with cottonwood root. His friends thought he was crazy, but he started gathering the Cottonwood root in the nearby riverbeds. It worked! And he had the time of his life trading with the Hopis. Soon he was taking Parrot, Macaw feathers, leather, coyote, fox hides and cottonwood root to trade for Hopi arts and crafts, Kachina dolls and pottery.
He got to know some long time Traders in the Verde Valley and Prescott, AZ who took him on trips to the Navajo Reservation and Santa Fe. He also got to be good friends with Rex Arrowsmith and his son Murray who were very active in the business. These traders would consign me merchandise to sell at shows, Galleries and on trips throughout the southwest and California.
As Mikes knowledge and experience grew on American Indian Art with a love and emphasis on pre-1940’s material, he advanced further to purchasing in other areas such as Old Pawn Jewelry, Beadwork, Baskets, Navajo rugs Old Hopi Kachina Dolls,
